Day Activity: Banteay Srei Temple & Surroundings Tour
After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and driver for a visit to the Banteay Srei Temple, a 10th-century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Located 25 km (16 mi) northeast of the main Angkor temples, Banteay Srei is famous for its detailed red sandstone carvings, which are among the finest in Southeast Asia. Known as the "Citadel of Women," this temple is smaller in scale than others in the Angkor complex, giving it a unique charm. Its intricate carvings and stunning architecture have earned it the title of the "jewel of Khmer art."
Banteay Srei was constructed in 967 AD by Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha, courtiers rather than a king. It was originally called Tribhuvanamaheśvara (Great Lord of the Threefold World) in reference to Shiva. The temple is also significant for the mythological depictions in its carvings, including the Kala, a mythical creature symbolizing time and Shiva.
After exploring Banteay Srei, continue your journey to visit the following temples:
• Banteay Samre: Another small but beautiful temple, often less crowded than other major sites.
• Baksei Chamkrong: A temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, known for its pyramid-like structure.
• Phimeanakas: A royal temple within the Angkor Thom complex, located near the Elephants Terrace.
• Thommanon: A smaller, more delicate temple with intricate carvings, dating back to the early 12th century.
• Phnom Bakheng: A hilltop temple offering panoramic views of Angkor Wat and the surrounding area. It's especially popular for sunset views.
Afterward, visit Phnom Kraom before returning to Siem Reap.
In the afternoon, enjoy some free time for shopping at the Factory Outlet in Siem Reap.
Overnight in Siem Reap.
Day Activity: Tonle Sap Lake & Kampong Phluk Village Tour
After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and driver for a fascinating boat ride on Tonle Sap Lake to the Kampong Phluk village. Located on the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, Tonle Sap is home to the floating communities of Kampong Phluk, known for their unique stilted houses. These houses are built on stilts that rise between 6 to 9 meters to accommodate the seasonal changes in water levels between the wet (May to October) and dry (November to April) seasons.
Kampong Phluk, meaning "Harbor of the Tusks," is a fishing-based community, with many residents relying on shrimp fishing during the wet season. In the dry season, as the water recedes, farming becomes a major income source. You will also have the chance to learn about how local children attend school in this water-based village, where boats often serve as the primary mode of transportation.
The tour provides an opportunity to witness the daily life of the local community, including the remarkable adaptation to the changing water levels and how the village is a model of sustainable living. Tourism has recently become an important source of income for the village, making it a fascinating blend of tradition and development.
Lunch will be at a local restaurant (own account).
After the boat tour, return to Siem Reap for a guided visit to Artisan Angkor, a center dedicated to the preservation of Cambodian crafts. Here, you will see skilled artisans at work, carving intricate designs from wood and stone, weaving fine silk, and creating other handicrafts. This is a great place to purchase high-quality souvenirs while supporting the local community.
Next, take a leisurely stroll around the Old Market (Psar Chaa), where you can observe local daily life and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. This market is the perfect spot for bargaining and purchasing handmade products, paintings, carvings, clothes, and traditional Cambodian crafts.
Overnight in Siem Reap.
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy some free leisure time to relax or explore the surroundings. Later, our driver will pick you up and transfer you to the new Siem Reap International Airport (SAI) for your departure to your next destination.
